National parks as we all know, are among the list of places where law abiding citizens are rendered defenseless by those who claim to have our best interests at heart....
What about national forests? I know you can hunt in them during season, but what are the laws about open carry, or recreational/target shooting? Is there a uniform, federal set of laws (I would guess) or do they go by the state's local laws?
What's the deal on guns in National Forrests?

Re: Carry in a National Forest
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 9:50 PMYou are prohibited in National monuments, but not all national forrests. There is a whole classification system for national forrests pertaining how they may be used, ecology, etc.
I was just in the Santa Ritas, and the local conservation group left a buncha pamphlets at thr trail head. The pamphlets had rules for the mountain that included 'no weapons.' Odd, since I researched the mountains a couple of times and never found any such reg. I'm thinking that the huggers just added that on their own. -

Re: Carry in a National Forest
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 11:47 PMcan't they get in trouble for misrepresenting the law? there should be some sort of felonious punishment for that. If they can blindside enough people into thinking that firearms are banned in that park, they may actually succeed in changing the laws there!
Stupid freakin anti-gunners. From Hell's Heart I hate their worthless commie tyrannous treasonous yellow guts! -

Unless they manage to convey to the reader that they are speaking as a state or local official or attorney or park ranger - - then no they aren't going to run afoul of the law for simply being dead wrong.

Re: Carry in a National Forest
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 12:43 AMEvery national forest I've looked into in Utah, seems to say carry is okay, open is fine and so is concealed, if you have a CCW. Can't shoot across waterways, or within 100 yards of a populated spot (like a camp area) and just plain target shooting in the high country serene wilderness is worded as 'not appropriate for wilderness areas' ... so although not explicitly prohibited, I guess the message is 'don't be a jackass just because we let you bring your gun.'
So far as I can tell, it looks like the answer is that for self defense, nobody will hassle you in a national forest in the state of Utah. -

Sun, August 24, 2008 - 8:53 PMIf I had a saddle scabbard, I would have seriously considered a long gun. mostly just because it's a fun idea to have a long gun in a scabbard on the backpack. -

Re: Carry in a National Forest
Mon, August 25, 2008 - 1:15 PMBack when I was a good ol boy scout, one of the other troops in our district had a BP cannon they had made from a scuba tank. They cut out the bottom, welded pegs in the sides (for swivel points on a sturdy wooden base), and had a fuze in the top where the oxygen spout normally screwed on. As a cannon of course, the top was now the back end, and the bottom was the front of the bore.
An 8.5 lb bowling ball fit just perfectly, wrapped in a cloth or rag, on top of a fourth of a cup of black powder.
And I tell ya, when they touch that thing off, you could feel it in the ground two hundred feet away. And that ball would go whistling up in the air about a thousand feet, and come back down on the side of the mountain. They really whistle like the bombs in cartoons. Then the scouts would scramble to the hillside to retrieve it and if it wasn't cracked or busted, they'd have another go with it. Didn't look very safe to me, but I saw them use it many many times and nothing ever went wrong. -

Re: Carry in a National Forest
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 6:03 PMGreg; try soaking the tennis balls in lighter fluid before shooting them. Flaming balls at night are awesome. The fumes are poisonous though.
I think carrying an old-west style gun in a scabbard is lower profile than carrying a Desert Eagle in a crossdraw holster.
I'm gonna carry the 45-70 this weekend through dense brush so I may carry it in hand (it makes the pack really wide.)
