Sound Suppressors

I'd like to open a thread on 'silencers', 'cans', sound suppressors....

What do you know about them?

Who makes the best ones?

Are there any truly decent 'homemade' designs?

What guns work best with silencers?

I understand they are legal to own in many states, and legal to use as well. My home state of Utah, is pretty relaxed about em. Does the ATF also need to regulate silencers that are homemade? I understand there's a $200 federal tax stamp on em, but if you make one, it's not exactly a purchase, so I don't see 'taxes' as being applicable. Am I wrong? who knows these things?

I'm sure we can deduce the answer through logical reasoning.

    Q. By making a suppressor at home, would you be depriving a government agency of money?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Does the government like to be cheated out of money?
    A. No.

    Q. If you made a machine gun at home, would the ATF be upset?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Are both machine guns and suppressors classified as NFA?
    A. Yes.

    Q. Are you licensed to sell, produce, or otherwise manufacture Class III/NFA items?
    A. (I don't know the answer to this, but I'm gonna say 'No' on a hunch)

Thus, I think we can conclude that the government would not be amused at your home-made sound suppressor. Sorry, mate.

      Damn...

Well, I guess the other questions still apply. And thanks, Chad... I *did* wake up this morning feeling like my self-esteem might be a little too high. Glad to have your input! lol

        Haha

Well, as far as what I know about them: the "whisper quiet" guns in movies are a complete Hollywood fabrication. You can suppress the sound of a shot, but you can't really "silence" it. Most of the suppressed guns I've seen are .22 or 9mm. 9mm ends up sounding about as loud as a .22, and a .22 ends up sounding like a BB gun. Anything higher caliber than 9mm is kind of a waste to silence as far as I'm concerned.

I've never seriously considered buying one... they typically run $500-$800, plus the $200 NFA stamp. That's way too much for something I consider a novelty item... because, let's face it, I'm a computer nerd who likes guns, not a secret agent.

You can buy supressors, but you need to purchase a tax stamp similar to one for an SBR, except with more paperwork...almost like getting a class III.

Probably the best gun on the market for a suppressor would be the H&K SOCOM. Not only is it designed to accept a can in record time, but it also has the slide lock so when you fire it the slide does not rack back. Since 45acp is subsonic, about all you hear is the sound of the bullet slapping the target.

22s, subsonic 9mms and 45s make good silenced rounds because they are slower than sound so there is no telltale supersonic crack.

You can't make your own silencers, legally, unless you are a class III manufacturer. A permit to own one would be for that specific silencer, transferable though.

However, I have heard of people making silencers out of plastic pop bottles. I'd avoid this route since you are likely violating state, federal, and G&F laws all at the same time.

hmm..... Okay. I thought it would be fun to own a silencer if I was going to get a PPK, right? But I guess now I know why nobody talks about silencers. Because they're too much of a pain in the arse to be anywhere near economically worthwhile compared to the ammount of amusement or enjoyment you get from owning one. I'll save that little ambition for more wealthy circumstances, when I'm sitting around with my colleagues placing million dollar bets on mundane whims, and lighting $20 bills on fire... to light my $100 bills.... to light my cigar.

You had asked who makes the best suppressors. According to Kokalis, Elite Iron Suppression Systems make the best he has ever tested. He was pretty emphatic about it in his October article on the subject in SGN.

You can actually find a wide assortment of common threaded pistol barrels in www.sportsmansguide.com. Though they are designed for compensators, they also fit the 'fake' silencers being sold. I don't remember seeing a barrel for the PPK, but they have quite a few others including Glocks, Colts, and Sigs.

Owning a silencer is not impossible or only for the wealthy. But it does bring you under the scrutiny of the Gestapo...er, the department of Nazi security, I mean the ATF.

                Okay...

How about something to direct the sound? those 'dummy' silencers that don't need a tax stamp.... or some specific shape of cone or cylinder or something, probably without any internal baffles.... Is there anything out there that anyone knows of that would at least direct more of the sound forward, away from the shooter? Like for a loud carbine rifle, for example. anything that might help but still not be classified as a 'suppressor'?

You can make a silencer but can never transfer it. It must also of course still be legal in your jurisdiction to begin with.

you need BATFE authorization to build it though, any then have the appropriate licensing to transfer it.

If you break ti thoughit, you can fix it onlyit, but can not make new parts for it unless you submit another ATF form 1 and pay another $200 tax as you did when you first got the permission.

When will the NRA file a class-action against the BATF for loss of hearing due to cost-prohibitive suppressor tax stamps?

That's actually a pretty cool idea. Sick the lawyers on Hillary :)

I've read that silencers are kinda expected in much of Europe's countryside. With less wide open spaces nobody wants to hear Charles's target practice.

Using 22 long rounds in a bolt action rifle I tried a variety of cheap easy approaches and not one worked.
    Pop bottle
5' Long 6" diameter sono tube packed with fiberglass
    Pillows

However, the pillow works rather nicely to prevent yourself from becoming covered in blow back when you are pretending to be angel eyes.
But you know that fact is...whenever I'm paid, I always finish the job.
