For everyday use, I carry my Cold Steel Ti-Lite. It is a stilletto type knife made of exellent quality material and it can stab though a cars hood and still be good. To me it is like a little fencing foil and it fits comfortably in my hand and opens so fast.

let me guess, shane.. you're from a place where guns and/or ccw's are prohibited...

That sucks.

I genuinely feel sad for people who are denied the essential right of self defense. Cause let's face it. A knife is not self defense against an armed(illegal firearm) and ruthless criminal. But, you make do with what you have to work with I guess.

Why's a cold steel blade for flesh only? Those blades withstand a hell of a torture test when it come's to trying to break them. You dont need that kind of blade just to cut somebody.

Cold Steels R1 Military Classic, its a well made copy of a Randall number 1 and a hell of alot cheaper to own.As to why i carry this blade is because its the best knife i own.I also carry an old Schrade-Walden trapper pocket knife for general blade work because the Cold Steel blade is for flesh only.

It's true, without people standing up and holding the line, legislators and judges will keep chipping away at it until people are boxed in to whatever boundaries they will finally enforce and hold against the government.

There's a group out here that advocates our right to 'open carry' in this state, which is perfectly legal, but uncommon. hasn't been done since cowboy days. Well, these guys take it upon themselves to start carrying openly in public places. And they're constantly being roughed up by the cops. thrown down. guns confiscated. arrested and made a scene of and treated like criminals...

And then the cops involved get to learn that *they* are the ones doing illegal things by oppressing their 'suspects' right to open carry. They get to learn that their interpretation of the law is not necessarily 'the law'... hopefully, if these open carry guys can hold the line and refuse to 'sit in the back of the bus' even though they face constant oppression for it, they may just swing the local mentality around. Citizens will learn to be comfortable around armed fellow citizens. Cops will learn to be tollerant and maybe even one day, 'supportive' of upstanding citizens who are really 'on their side' about keeping society polite and peaceful.

''A right not excercised is a right lost'' is their slogan. I look at places like California, where gun folk hunker down in fear of new laws passing and do everything in their power to comply with every right stripped from them for fear of raising an eyebrow... and I have to agree wholeheartedly.

I think right's are taken away from the people that are willing to let them go or dont pay attention to what's going on in the first place. The former governor of missouri Bob Holden uttered the word's "gun control" during the passing of concealed carry. That's why he's the former governor now. He took a land slide loss a few month's later. ha ha Remember that name. He may be coming to a state near you!!

Then try to keep his mouth wrestled away from my head in the hopes will soon die from the gun shot wound's. Black bear? try to keep my fist rammed down his throat or something.
I guess if you live in a place that won't let you properly protect yourself with a gun, you gotta make do both physically and psychologically with whatever you are still allowed to have.

Here in Utah, about 1 in 30 people has a CCW. That's just looking at resident-issued CCW's/overall population. It would be hard to find a guy without a knife.

A fist fight, well nowadays I try really hard to avoid violence. I've only run into two guys (but one incident) that just wouldn't take ''I don't want to fight'' for an answer in the past three years. I taught them that not wanting to fight does not necessarily equate to not being capable of kicking their asses. I have a line, I avoid situations that cross the line, but if they do I'll hold it. If the other guy pulls a knife, I would try to get out of the situation as fast as possible, even if I had to take off running and drop my ego behind me to get better speed. If he chased me down, or I was cornered in some way, and he seemed intent to stick me, I'd finish things in a very quick, and very loud, and very permanent way.

I can't really think of a scenario I'd pull a knife with violent intent, having my other option. If things got to the point where I had to pull out my gun, no cop or lawyer I can imagine, would disagree with my right to use it. (once again, I'm not in California. I can imagine cops and lawyers prosecuting (persecuting?) ANYONE out there for ANYTHING)

<<A knife in today's world, is pretty much a tool, not a weapon. A handgun, once again, in today's world, is a weapon, not a tool. Nobody packs a concealable kel-tec for hunting elk or slaughtering cattle or defending sheep from wolves (tool applications) and nobody *should* bring a knife to ANY kind of fight (weapon applications). A knife to a fistfight is a felony. a knife to a knife fight is stupidity. A knife to a gun fight deserves a darwin award.>>

You have to remember / realize how many people carry knives currently, whether as a tool or a weapon I wont say. Perhaps because i live in a state where I cant carry a gun and I do carry a knife always I am more conscious of it but if you start looking, not saying that you arent looking now, 90% of males have that tell tale clip in their pocket indicating a knife, which means a fist fight can and often does escalate into a knife or some other weaponed fight.

And although knife vs gun is not my first choice, depending on distance and skill sets of both people the person with the knife can come out ahead. Remember there is the 10 foot rule which is now finally being drilled into cops, if a cop is 10 feet or closer to someone with a knife, who is good, the person with a knife can draw and cut the cop before he can draw and use his gun. Its been tested over and over again and it is consistently proven in favor of the knife carrier. In close quarters if someone tried pulling a gun I would use a knife the same way as i would against another knife, in martial arts called defanging the snake usually, but cutting the tendons and muscles starting at the wrist working up the arm, so the bg can not use the weapon - justifiable self defense in most if not all states, knife against gun and you did not kill him.

that's a good case, Simon, except that knives and guns are both considered deadly weapons. They are at the same 'level of force' by any state law I'm aware of.

Otherwise, I can see the efficacy of knowing martial arts or other fighting styles, as well as carrying pepper spray as a backup to a firearm, which is considered a step below the 'lethal force' of knives and guns.

And I agree, generally guys who like guns also like knives. I'm just wondering why they are so often marketed or shown as a paired 'set'...

Kind of like having your garden hose and your torque wrench as a 'matching set'.... yes they're both tools, but I don't get how they fit into a 'matching set' category.

A knife in today's world, is pretty much a tool, not a weapon. A handgun, once again, in today's world, is a weapon, not a tool.
<<Is this because gun magazines figure guys who like guns also like knives? Or are there really a lot of people out there who think a knife is a great backup for a gun? I mean, if your gun gets taken from you in a struggle, are you going to pull out a knife and win against your own gun, and against a guy who is obviously good enough to get your own gun away from you? Or is it for guys who imagine themselves like Rambo, they want a knife for 'quiet work' and a gun for storming the bad guy's lair? >>

1. They think, and from I have seen from friends and belonging to custom knife forums they are correct, people who like guns like knives and vice versa

2. it is about apropriate responses and options, if you can or should (legally) cut someone instead of shooting them then you should make sure you have that option. If you are wrestling with someone and you lose your gun its good to have a back up choice, a knife while trying to prevent the bg from bringing his gun to bare or his knife into play. Its the same rationale as studying a martial art or other self defense, if your only option in a fight is to shoot someone you are going to get yourself screwed, in a fight and after legally.

Greg, are you retarded? lol.... a knife, even if you could stab the bear in the heart ten times in half a second, is not going to put him down faster than a .44 magnum in that same little bear heart in that same little half a second.

And I don't know anyone who can stab a bear in the heart ten times in half a second.

Let alone punch through his skull to put him down instantly... I don't know if anybody can put a knife through something that is strong enough to deflect a .357 magnum.

You have one knife, he has five on each hand, plus fangs. Bring a gun to a knife fight. especially when it's your bowie vs. ten knives and four times the muscle power in his arms than in yours.

I've got a question to pose in this thread:

I've noticed most gun magazines have knife advertisements in them. I've noticed many people like to display their gun and knife as a 'matched set' in pictures....

Is this because gun magazines figure guys who like guns also like knives? Or are there really a lot of people out there who think a knife is a great backup for a gun? I mean, if your gun gets taken from you in a struggle, are you going to pull out a knife and win against your own gun, and against a guy who is obviously good enough to get your own gun away from you? Or is it for guys who imagine themselves like Rambo, they want a knife for 'quiet work' and a gun for storming the bad guy's lair?

Or is it that they are just different 'tools' for different jobs, and people like them to match? My hammer and my level are different colors, does that make me less cool?

I'm just really confused about the whole 'gun and knife set' thing.

I keep a 3.5 inch lock blade buck in my pocket all the time. If I'm running river's with white water stretches or horse camping where I have to keep the weight down and use tree branches for poles/stakes for an old tarp or something I packed a cold steel srk for a long time and a buck stealth for a while for work knives. They were both durable blades. I bought a ontario/rat 5 knife last year but havent had the chance to really put it to the test doing basic camp craft. I dont have the freedom I used to have. seem's like a good blade though and I wanted to try the micarta handle cause the kraton handle's get a glooey feeling after a while.

Depends on your local state laws - - and more importantly how the courts have interpreted them.

For example the courts in NJ have gone with the idea that all blades ( no matter how long) are per se "dangerous weapons" and unlawful if those blades are either fixed or can be locked.
The courts engaged in some lengthy reasoning about why blades are fixed or locked and concluded that the only use for a fixed or locked blade is for stabbing.

This they got to by following federal case law some of originating in California.

So in effect the NJ courts have placed an enormous amount of power and discretion in the hand of the police.

I used to have a pretty sweet boot dagger a while back. It came with a really great leather sheath with a steel clip on the back and a thumb-break snap retention strap on the hilt of the dagger. 5 inch blade or thereabouts.

One day I didn't bring the dagger with me, but left the sheath on my boot. Took the boots off to take a nap at a friend's dorm, and when I woke up, the sheath was gone. Never did find out who the bastard was. I gave the sheath-less dagger to my little brother. He's one of those ninja nerds who collects swords and knives like crazy.

I've got a ka-bar, which I find are less than ideal for most knife applications as a tool. It's kind of crappy and doesn't take an edge hardly at all. My all around everyday knife is just a good Buck lockblade with a 3.5 inch blade. Then I also keep an old-timer with three small folding blades, that's for carving wood projects, or just whittling at the campfire.

I also have an old civil-war cavalry sabre, which is great fun for chopping watermelons!
