Arlen Spectre and a few others are examining the notion of a national concealed permit. Don';t get your hopes up, it is all still in the exploratory stage.
Actually I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand it would be nice to have a single permit to travel the state.
On the other, it is trampling on state's rights. One of the great things about our 50 states is that they are different. That's why people live in CT or TX or the PRK; because they like it there. They like the laws, the way of life, etc, etc.
As much as I would not mind a national permit (though I am sketchy about the feds handling it...) I have always hated the do-gooders who decide they have to foist their beliefs on others by taking their local issue to the federal level. Gay marriage for instance, Marriage has always been a state's issue to govern, yet there has been a lot of pushing for a federal law on the matter. Abortion never should have been determined by the supreme court, it was a state's issue medical care is typically a state governed thing.)
How do you all weigh in on a national CCW permit? Does it sound like a gun registration scheme or a good idea?

Re: National CCW is on the table
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 7:20 PMI agree on the states rights. we fought a revolution for the rights of the states to govern themselves, we call it the war against yankee agression, yankees call it the civil war.i live in a area where i cross state lines a lot and a federal liscence would be nice if the statea endorse it. but would that take all ccw out of state hands?do i want some anti gun phyco from california or ny deciding what firearms i can own? at least here in rural wv im represented by ppl that know what life is like here. -

Wed, August 12, 2009 - 7:15 AMYou a Rebel, Greg? :)
Here in AZ we roll our eyes at the Yankees and Rebels. Why go to war over slavery when you can hire Mexicans to do it cheaper! :)
That is another point that you make there. Federal control would no-doubt be stricter than any single state. There are all sorts of things they could throw in, reuirements to report possession of a weapon when meeting LE, limited carry locations, wierd highway rules, etc. The feds could come up with a lot of zany stuff you would be obliged to abide by. I do think discretionary CCW permits should be illegal as they lead to discrimination. All states should be Shall Issue states.
It would be preferable for the states to adopt uniform laws of reciprocity. Having the feds run anything scares me. They have already consolidated control of federal police under one umbrella, and in an emergency they consolidate the military and LE. Nope, just don;t trust the feds to handle CCWs. It would wind up costing as much as a Class III.

Re: National CCW is on the table
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 1:24 PMThe Fed instituted the Ban on all manner of weapons from automatics to rocket launchers and vehicle mounted weapons
The fed was behind that crazy assault weapon ban
So the Fed entered the field and trammeled states rights plenty
Of course once the fed "occupies the field" States no longer have any say. And once that happens you may - or not - be eligible for a CCW but, no matter what, once the fed has that strangle hold they can always reverse position and just t take all your guns away by passing one lousy law.
The Fed's intervention is always a double edged thing.
