I predicted months ago that Obama would use the border wars as grounds to ban guns in some way. Just in today's paper a statement from the ATF claims that 90% of the guns confiscated by Mexico from cartel members were not purchased through legal dealers. The ATF believes that the guns are obtained at gun shows or American black market. The ATF stressed the fact that they were able to achieve this by tracing the guns, a critical need of theirs.

There, they said it pretty much. Obama will start with a registration program. Low profile, they will start registering new sales, then expand it to include guns you have had for years based on some wierd definition of an assault weapon. It worked so well for the Germans in 1938.

The problem with this, is that buried under the headlines the sample of 20000 weapons traced was hand selected by the Mexican police before being sent to us. They had confiscated 120000 guns total, but we were only allowed to trace 20k of them. Based on this fragment of the data, the Obama administration will champion a quiet little layered gun registration bill. You watch and see.
