as I was looking over what I have, I noticed I dont have anything that will throw a lot of rounds out inna hurry , except my sks. Im looking at 3 different guns as well as adding a cpl more sks to the collection.
the fal in .308 essentially a .308 ar15
mini .30
mini 14
Im not a real big fan of the .223, but the mini 14 is a awesome little gun, asn as much as I like the Ak 47, I think the sks performs just as well for 1/2 the price any Ideas yall?

Re: Assault rifles
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 11:17 PMwell if you feel your 7.62x39 is covered with the sks, I would definitely opt for a mini-14 over an AR15. Two reasons:
First, mini-14 uses a short stroke piston, not direct gas impingement, which can make the difference between a gun that works and a gun that works as a club, if you ever find yourself in a situation where a daily cleaning ritual is not possible for the gas operating system of the AR15...
Second, and in my estimation this carries a lot of weight, is that the mini-14 looks very benign. It does not sound off any 'assault rifle' alarms in anyone's head during peacetime. To most people, it looks just like any simple hunting or ranch gun. In peacetime, an AR15 carries with it a very high profile as the black assault rifle, and seen by the wrong eyes can generate some adverse social reactions. In bad times, the last thing you want to be is 'high profile'.
The third reason I would opt for the mini-14 is just my personal prefference for wood and steel and graceful lines. I've never been much for the plastic 'tacti-cool' thing. No Kydex holsters, no polymer grips. I understand their strong points and I understand their great durability, I'm not saying anything against plastic. It's just that I'm a wood and leather kind of guy.

Re: Assault rifles
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 5:40 AMYou have the SKS which fires the 7.62x39 so I would go for the mini .30. The reason is because you will not have to buy different ammo. If you have a firearm that fires .223 then I would just look for the best deal mini .30 or mini 14. If you have something that fires .308 and have the money, from what I have seen FAL's are not cheap, I would also look into the FAL. Just my thoughts on it.

Re: Assault rifles
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 5:29 PMI have a mini-14 and love it. It's a 188 series, not as accurate as the new ones but good enough for battle field accuracy. My wife pretty much took it away from me so I have my eye-ball on a mini 30 too.
I think the 308 AR is the AR 10. Theyre expensive too. I think AR's are cool looking but I read in some military articles that 80% of soldier's with m-16, m4 designes have had their weopon jam in a fire fight. That would just suck. -

Re: Assault rifles
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 8:27 PMyeah.... like I said... one of the huge advantages of the rugers over the armalites is the piston-operation. in a squad or platoon it's bad enough to suffer a weapons malfunction, but at least you have several other buddies there to cover your vulnerable butt while you try to fix the problem or switch to another weapon.
When you're all alone with your one rifle, you better be damn 100% plus another 100% sure that your gun will-not-jam-ever. Armalites can NEVER give ANYONE that kind of assurance. EVER. -

Re: Assault rifles
Thu, August 28, 2008 - 10:55 PMI like the FAL's a lot better. But, you still have to consider how much weight it carries in your particular situation, to go with a definite, high-profile 'assault rifle' design, or if you would be better served by something equally capable but much more docile-looking.
This argument used to mean a lot during the ban of the 90's... somehow I think maybe the next gun ban will be more careful to pinpoint function over cosmetics, and not leave out such nice loopholes as the mini-14 or mini-30. -

Sat, August 30, 2008 - 6:50 PMI thought the mini's were on the ban in the ninety's. I know ruger kissed alot of butt back then but I never was sure if the mini's made the list or not. -

Re: Assault rifles
Mon, September 1, 2008 - 7:52 PMI think the reports of the M4's jamming are over-exagerated. That being said , yes the direct gas inpingement sytem does require lots of cleaning, but the AR will outshoot the mini-14 all day long. I own both, I like them both but the AR is a better shooter. I would go with the FN-FAL in 308. They are heavy but they are awesome. -

Re: Assault rifles
Tue, September 9, 2008 - 5:01 PMFN FALs give me wood. But I have never heard anything good about the Cetmes. They always seem like an inexpensive alternative, but people who own them either hate them or have only lackluster satisfaction.
With all the crap you can bolt to the SKS, and considering the quality of the Yugos coming in, the SKS is a pretty good choice, just not the most accurate gun in the world. T he Yugos are the best of the SKSs I believe. Especially if you can get one where the compensator has been installed instead of the grenade launcher tube (or get one with the grenade launcher with compensator holes.)
Both the M4 and the Mini14 are highly customizable with tons of parts for both---tie
The M4 is a bit lighter and shorter than the Mini.

Sat, September 20, 2008 - 11:32 AMI doubt the m-4's jamming is over exagerated. never shot one, just read the survey's. I've shot plenty of Ar 15's and my dad would cuss an m-16 all day long as plastic junk shit after his experience with one in veitnam. I hear some of the AR companies are making rifle's with a more dependable operation. I dont know. An AR in the same price range as a mini 14 in my opinion is a lesser gun. -

Re: Assault rifles
Sun, September 21, 2008 - 1:54 PMThe Vietnam version, early M16s had design issues. Stoner had wanted a chrome lined bore but they cheaped out. They wound up having to put it in for the M16a1.
Also, Vietnam was funky about leaving one chambered overnight. If you did, it would fire but not extract. The climate would seal the round into the chamber. You had to carry in condition two until you started patrol. -

Re: Assault rifles
Sun, September 21, 2008 - 4:13 PMLet us not forget, they were also touted as 'self cleaning' in vietnam, I guess due to the internal blast of the direct-gas-impingement design.
They were not issued with cleaning kits or cleaning instructions. Needless to say, Stoner never intended them or designed them as 'self cleaning'
And yes. They needed chrome chambers and chrome bores.
