Bought a Moss 500 about 15-20 years ago and never had a problem with it.About the only thing I don't like is there is a slight looseness in the first 1/4 inch of travel on the pump that results in a an occasional rattle.

twice the speed, less than half the mass. 90 grains is pretty typical for a .410 slug. That's more like a .380 in bullet mass, although the speed supposedly bumps it up to .357 magnum ballistics at the muzzle, I still wouldn't expect much penetration on medium game. I think I still want one as a rabbit gun, but as a survival gun I think I will have to pass it up, after the research I've done. Despite the pros of size and weight and simplicity, the cons of what you can shoot and the ranges you can shoot it at, make it pretty much a short-range rabbit gun.

yea but it's all miniature and cute. Like a remote control car or a model of a sailboat. Imagine how fun a scaled-down remington 870 for .410 would be... well, if you COULD make a properly scaled-down 870. hehe. I would totally want one. Then I'd have to buy myself a midget and dress him up like a SWAT team cop, and name him Carl. He would stand by as security at the front door, and double as something to sit on when you're taking off your boots.

What do you get with 000 buckshot out of a .410 three pellets? A slug is good to about 50 yards but at close range I guess it would like a 45 acp round. .410's are pretty worthless as a survival gun. Ammo is expensive as well.

.410 is only viable if you're using 000 buckshot out of it. I've recently seen some Mossie cruisers in the same caliber for about $150. However, if you can handle shooting tactical (heavy payload/ lighter recoil) loads out of a 12 guage, why bother with the .410. Unless you're expecting an invasion of zombie rabbits.

You can't go wrong with an 870. It's probably the most proven shot gun.

if it's gonna be a hobbie shotgun, then pretty much whatever you want will probably suffice. If it's a Home Defense weapon, I'd go with the most you can afford to pay. It'd suck to be in a life or death situation and hear the loudest sound on the battlefield.

look at the winchester defender as well, usually they are about 220 buks new, and they hold 8 rounds compared to the 5 rds a 870 holds.

oh yea he also said the mossie action bars were too thin. Now I did notice they are considerably thinner than the remington/pardner pump, but I don't have any experience at all to know whether that makes a difference in real-world reliability.

I'm looking at the Remington 870, the Mossberg 500, and I am tempted by the NEF 'Pardner Pump' which as far as I can tell, is H&R's knockoff of the 870... even the internal parts are interchangeable. The pardner pump is going around here for $180 NIB.... tempting. A guy at a store said he preferred the remington over the mossberg, on account the action-release bothers his hand where it sits behind the trigger guard on the mossie, and is comfortably in front of the trigger guard on the 870.... He also says the loading gate is more prone to getting sticks and crap in it on the mossie on account it is a rather skeletal little piece, compared to Remington's generous metal flap. Just looking at price tags, my comparisson is more between the NEF pardner pump, and the mossberg 500. For my intents and purposes I don't know if the remington is enough of a difference to pay for. I'm really interested in hearing from folks who own any of these guns and what they like/dislike about them, and what they would reccommend?
