Shopping spree!

It's off to the big 'Crossroads of the West' gunshow up in Salt Lake City tomorrow, Saturday the 19th. The wife let me take six hundred of the tax returns... I'm hoping for a cheap plinker marlin '94 in .357 ....but you never know what's gonna jump out and tug at your trigger finger at these things.

I'm giddy as a schoolgirl. Part of me knows that gunshows lately, seem to lack the cool deals and selection for some reason...the other part of me insists on being optimistic. I might even get a sudden bout of 'tummy ache' to get off work early? What do you think?

You should be able to pick up a no thrill's bush master for about that. A new mini 14 for about the same price. Even though you read about terrible accuracy with them, mine's not bad at all. You can get a 700 for about 450.00, in 308 or 30.06. and have money left to put a scope on it. Last I checked a 94 was only about 275.00 So you may get to buy a couple of gun's.

a '94 for $275? I would be sooo happy if I could get one at that price. 30-30's are all over the place... but I really want a .357mag, I hope someone's got an old beater winchester conversion, or one of those rossi puma 94's for cheap. I want to save a little to pick up some bulk milsurp for the mauser, that stuff seems to be drying up lately. I've also seen .38 snubbies at these shows for as low as $100.... if they aren't pieces of crap, I might pick one up for CCW. I guess all I'd need is a derringer and I'd have a whole family of .38/.357 caliber shooters haha. All the more leverage to justify the reloading supplies.... one day...

Well, it's off to work for me, and the Network Nazi blocks all the interweb sites he can, including this one... so I'll let you know how it goes when I get back from the show! Keep your fingers crossed I'll find some good deals and not just a bunch of old geezers showing off their collection pieces, marked with prices that are obviously intended to scare buyers away.

Well guys.... It was a total flop. I dunno... was there a memo I missed lately where private sales are no longer legal at gun shows? Or was it just a horrible turnout? I have no idea. All I know is I drove forty minutes outa my way, paid twenty bucks for me and my wife to get in, and all it was, was a bunch of gun dealers hocking the $h!t that doesn't sell off their normal racks at their stores, either because they are wall-mount 'collectables' or super expensive high-end stuff.... I saw more than five barrets, for example.

There were only two guys who had ANY leverguns in .357 mag. One had a marlin '94, for $450, and the other had a rossi puma '92 for $485.... I offered the rossi guy $400, and he actually got mad! as in, chewed me out and ran me off his stand! hahahaha. I offered the Marlin guy $400, and he simply said a friendly 'no'. I ALMOST talked myself into buying it anyway, because it really is the gun I wanted. But after handling it for a while, it had a lot of dents and scratches in an otherwise new stock (looks like rattling around in the back or a truck type of wear) and minor pitting all over the sides of the reciever. I figured, if it's not even a private sale, and I'm gonna have to do all the hassle paperwork, and Big-5 or Wal-Mart can get me the same gun for $480 brand new.... Why would I pay this dude nearly full new price, for a used gun that he probably bought off of some hunter for $200 or less?

Matter of fact, the more I thought about it, why the hell would I pay ANY of these FFL guys full price for their used guns? I didn't see any deals that were still a deal after the meager show admission price. Seriously.... it was so lame. I'm kinda big on private sales. If I didn't mind the paperwork I would just go to the gun store any day of the week, it's just as good if not cheaper after all the gas money and 'pain in the ass' factor is involved.

Long story short, I did get one good deal. A case of 500rds Winchester .357 mag 125gr JHP for about $120. Killer. If I hadn't been so put out by disappointment, I probably would have bought another couple of cases. As it was, I just took my damn box of bullets and went home.

I am so disillusioned about gunshows.

I'll poke around the classifieds for a .357 levergun locally. If not, I'll probably just buckle and get one from an FFL, and it will probably still be around $450.

Well I know some ot the lib's around here dont' like wal-mart. The retail giant built by the dumb arkansas hillbilly Sam Walton. But wal-mart does beat anybody's prices on the gun's and ammo they carry. The guy at the gunshop might get mad if I try to jew him on a price but that's alright. I'll go to wal-mart and get it. Unless it's an assault rifle or hand gun wal mart is the place for hunting rifles or shot gun's or ammo.

I dunno... I've seen what the FFL guys offer when a guy brings a gun to sell them. It's usually about 25% or less, of real bluebook value. I don't think I'm jewing the guy at the gun-shop if I offer 400 bucks for a 480 dollar gun that he paid less than 200 for, used. I think it had less to do with my offer than it had to do with the timing of my offer. I could go back this afternoon, during the last hours of the gunshow, I'm sure he'd be more willing to negotiate. Oh well. I avoid Wal-Mart when it comes to guns. I use them as a price refference, but I've never bought a gun there and I'm not sure if I ever would. I don't know how it is in missourah, but back here, it's the gun shops that tend to be active supporters of pro-gun legislation and culture, and the big-box chains tend to be either neutral or anti-gun. I'd rather put my gun money where it will do more good for people who own guns.

I havent bought a gun at walmart in year's. I already have some of what they have to offer and not interested in what else they have left. They did irritate me when they quit selling handgun's calling them a murder tool or something like that. They did cower down to the anti gun people.

Oh, I have a gun show story. It was in hot spring's arkansas back around 95. I was about to drop a 100 dollar bill for a case hunting knife. The guy had had them out on the table and when I picked it up to look at it he said "what are doing?" I said I was looking at your knife and he said "you look with eyes, not with your hand's." And took it away from me and put it back on the table. Needless to say, I didnt buy a knife from him.

Well thousand, While we were discussing wal-mart, I just read today that wal-mart is going to start turning over film's of gun sales to law enforcement to help fight crime. I may even stop buying ammo there since I read that. Gun group's should call for a boycott on all gun and ammo purchases from wal-mart.

                      wow.... yea.

Before Katrina, before I developed this funny aversion to being in the 'registered gun owner' (I.E. readymade FEMA gun confiscation roster) I used to go to an FFL guy here in town who swore that if the 2nd ammendment were ever repealed, or if a similar confiscation order were issued in his area, he would see to it that an unfortunate fire destroyed his sales reccords and serial numbers.

Not that it matters on the grand scale, as the Feds keep a list with every background check.... (I suppose you can avoid THAT list by getting a CCW and bypassing the requisite pre-purchase check...but I'm sure all the CCW's are first on the confiscation lists anyhow.) But I liked the guy's principles. He seemed to take it pretty serious. Who can really know a man's mettle until he is tested, though. I hope it never comes to that.

Wal-mart can take their 'couple dollars cheaper' ammo and go to hell with it as far as I'm concerned. The way the economy is going, a couple dollars savings is hardly worth the time you spend in their long checkout lines anyhow.

Well, If you get a back ground check, it doesnt mean you actually bought the gun. Just say you changed your mind when you got to thinking about bill's. If the gunshop guy actually destroy's the record's instead of saying "yes sir, here they are, don't take my dealer license." Then you might be in the clear.

Gun Shows are not what they used to be.Typically there are rarely any GOOD deals to be found unless you catch a private seller. All the merchants want top dollar for everything and there is no bartering as in the past.
I guess what really pisses me off is that they have the gull to actually charge admission. Why would I want to pay someone an admission price just to go inside and spend my money?I just don't get it.
I have stood outside trying to catch that private seller and occasionaly got a good price on a gun and I didn't have to fill out any paperwork.

do people actually buy them at shows?
or is it more of a look at the new stuff?
we have them at the fair grounds often.......but I tend to avoid the fair grounds like the plague!

At the gun show's here, they charge addmission, want top dollar for the gun's, you have to fill out just as much paper work as you do at the gun shop, then there's a cop with a table by the exit to make sure you buy a county permit and register that thing on the way out the door.

Here in Georgia, there are no county permits. But they do charge admission. There are two "saving graces" I've seen at these gun shows:

                              1) I can haggle. Dealers are willing to haggle.
                              2) I can sell/trade. I can literally hang a sign on my backpack that says, "USP 9mm Full-Sized sale/trade." Both dealers and fellow attendees have approached me for business that way.

"there's a cop with a table by the exit to make sure you buy a county permit and register that thing on the way out the door. " wow.... I don't think I could handle that much paperwork. I remember California was that way, they make you register all your guns with the state when you enter, and with the county and city whenever you move around. I never did, in fact I refused to do it. People at the shooting range thought I was crazy. I think they're crazier.

Now that gunshows are nothing more than your regular local gun shop owners selling regular gun shop deals at gun shop prices, it really is a gouge to have to pay for admission. And the expo center where they host these thing in Salt lake.... they actually have the gall to turn off all the water fountains and hang little 'out of order' signs on each one, and charge $3.75 a bottle for water. I watched the janitor turn off the valves on the fountains, I guess he forgot to do it BEFORE everyone got there. I was thirsty as hell and I would have kicked him in the nuts, but kicking a janitor in the nuts is illegal in Utah.

I don't think I'm ever going to a gunshow ever again. What a waste of excitement.

Gun shows are best for buying ammo and reloading supplies. You can get catalog prices without the UPS ground expenses.

At the gun shows in my area there are these Russian guys who always have a table. Every single time I have dealt with these schmoes it has been a bad experience. One time we negotiated a flat, out-the-door price...then he adds tax and stuff. Another time the tac light they sold me didn;t last long enough to make it out of the building. Their stuff always looks cool, but is either overpriced or junk.
