"Like a PEZ dispenser"

My sister and brother-in-law are afraid of guns, generally speaking. having their first child, and the condition of the world today, has somehow enlightened them to the idea that guns aren't just for bad guys. They just bought an 870. Cheers.

Now they want a pistol. My sister calls me from a gun store and starts asking me questions. Allow me to quote an excerpt from this conversation....

"What kind of gun should I get?"
(well, what kinds are you looking at?)
"well, there's this one called a browning something .25 but it looks too small."
(Yea, that's pretty small if you want it to protect yourself.)
"What about Glocks? What's the story with them?"
(well, they're really reliable and everybody loves them. They're pretty good guns.)
"Where's the bullets?"
(huh?)
"Well you know the guns with the round spinny part, they remind me of cowboy movies?"
(yes. those are called 'revolvers')
"Yea...well I can see where the bullets go in those. But where do the bullets go in the glock?"
(In the handle. There's a magazine in there that holds all the bullets.)
"How?"
(Like a PEZ dispenser. You load the bullets in from the top, it keeps em stacked up and dispenses them into the gun, one at a time.)
"OHHH. yea the guy at the store just showed me how you take one out."
(yea it's not so hard once you get the hang of it.)
"So what gun should I get?"

Now, friends, what would you answer to that? I told her to be happy with the 870 and hold off for a while on handguns. She and her husband are obviously thinking of concealed carry... But they also want something for camping. Ever since a local black bear ate someone's kid last year, they feel like they need a gun for their many summer camping trips.

What do you tell someone who knows nothing about guns and is afraid to use one, but is hell-bent on owning the responsability of a killing tool?

And when is the gun safety course scheduled? YA know they one they absolutely have to attend~?

While trying to teach my wife to shoot in my hand gun range
I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting."
I gave her the gun ( 9mm semi auto).
I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting."
Taught her to hold it where the safety was what it did and why
I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting."
That a new shiny deadly fresh bullet chambered every time it fired - showed her -
I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting." & "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting."
coached through the point and shoot thing.
I told her "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting."& "Take you finger out of the trigger guard when you aren't shooting."

She closed her eyes tilted the gun up at the ceiling and fired it.

Then ( there's more) She left her finger on the trigger (right fucking on it) and waved the gun across my chest asking what she should do now?

How many times had I said: "Never point a gun at something you don't plan on shooting?"
Never give your chick your gun.

They really, really need a class. Make sure hey get one.

My sister asked me the same question. She wanted a hand gun. I told her to get a .38 smith revolver. I figured that was something she could handle and similar to the .22 she used to shoot. If she got excited with something like a glock there's no telling what might get shot. lol You cant beat a shot gun for home defense. When your awaken from a deep sleep from your door being kicked in, a shot gun is a good point and shoot gun. Something you can still hit something with fairly easy when your startled and your heart's racing. It's easy to be way off target with a hand gun when your panicked.

I asked today, what finally decided them on getting the shottie...

My sister explained to me that the night before, their burglar alarm had gone off in the late hours, and woke them up. Perimeter alarm breached, they suddenly realized the folley of their false sense of security... A bad guy in the house, and the cops on their way (anywhere from fifteen minutes to four hours, depending on the cop's mood and how many donuts he had left to finish off)... My sister's husband had to try to clear their house, in PJ's with bare hands and a flashlight. The guy didn't even have a baseball bat or even some pepper spray. I guess that scared em pretty bad.

Let me first explain a few points. This house, takes about ten minutes or more, to clear in any kind of secure fashion. They live in a seven thousand square foot, three story brand-new home, the kind of neighborhood where everybody's trying to keep up with the Jones's and all the wives are ex-supermodel high-maintenance and helpless, and husbands are often gone on business. The homes are full of jewelry and electronics and there's an escalade or a lexus in every bay of each person's respective four-car garages. Whether you're a rapist or a thief, it's pretty much your playground.

They found a balcony doorway left open upstairs, in one of the many rooms they don't use. Obviously a home intrusion. Now to figure out, is the bad guy still here? or did the alarm scare him away?

Turns out, the guy was scared away. Nobody to be found.

I guess they decided that next time, it's a lot more reassuring to do your dark-hallway-exploring with a Remington 870 than a karate-chop hand.

        HA Ha
At the very least They need motion and infra red detectors inside the house and a feed to the Master bedroom.
I'd prefer that plus CCTV with audio and master bedroom control over the lighting.

If you have invaders it'd be so much nicer to know where they are before going to look for them. Pop your blue-tooth on and let the missus tell you where they are while you are on the stalk.

Has any one made a flash bang that is suitable for residential applications?

well, a shell of Dragon's Breath in a 12-gauge would be a pretty wild 'flash bang'... but you'd need to repaint several walls and patch up some scorched pits from the magnesium balls. It would certainly incapacitate and stun and severely burn anyone standing within the cone of fire.

They have video cameras at the front door and a couple other places on the exterior of the house, but they feed closed-circuit to the televisions on special channels. Mostly just to see who'se at the door. They have infrared motion sensors in the house, but once they trip off, that's al you get. The dispatcher for any typical high-end home security system will be able to tell you which door was opened, and which sensors have been tripped off in which order, but if the bad guy backtracks it's not going to set of a second signal unless the system were deactivated and re-activated again. So you can't really track someone's progress through your home. The systems you see in MOST people's houses today, just blip an unidentified 'breach' alarm, regardless and undistinguishing of which sensor tripped it off.

All things considered, their security system is pretty good. We're not talking about the white house or buckingham here. Cameras in every room? kinda creepy voyeur-ish, wouldn't you think?

What is the best home-defense shot? '00 is obviously a bit heavy for interior walls. What's the line that's light enough to not destroy your home, but heavy enough to be effective?

Brent made the best suggestion with the 38 cal revolver. A lot less likely to have an AD, less controls to fritz around with, inherently accurate. Stoke it with magsafe or glasers and it'll stop anything on 2 legs.

Then they have to start worrying more about how to stash the gun. Kids will find stuff, and until they are 8 or 9 they really do not understand the danger of a gun and cannot be trusted to leave one alone.

They can take a course, or you could teach them yourself. Seems like something their folks shoulda done, but you're kin too.
