Husqvarna Shotgun

I didn't know Husky made anything but chainsaws... apparently, I don't know everything...yet.

I'm seriously thinking about this late 1920's (or so they tell me) husqvarna, double barrel side-by-side with external hammers. They call the forearm a 'sliver' I guess. And it has an under-latch to crack open the action, not a top thumb-latch like the coach guns I'm used to.

It locks up nice and tight, all the parts seem to be in great condition and the price was knocked way down for some cosmetic 'wear and tear' which is fine, I really enjoy a good cosmetic restoration project. The tag $199 but the register said $179, there were two other similar acquisitions from the same private collection, but in better cosmetic shape (although one was poorer condition mechanically) each going for $250

The one downside I can see is that my online research points strongly toward these guns all having a 2 1/2 inch chamber with a short forcing cone. Some sources say you're fine having a gunsmith open it to 2 3/4 and lengthening the forcing cone, other sources say that is unsafe in some guns.

What is your experience or uncle's experience with Husqvarna shotguns? What do you know about lengthening the breech in a shotgun?

I dont pretend to know anything about old guns but it would seem easier to shorten the shells. But again, this is an old old gun. Maybe it will explode with modern ammo in it? I am not sure at all. I would spend a few extra bucks and get a real good pump. Michael

I already have a pump gun, I just reeeeeely want a side by side. I've wanted one for a long time. The american 1878 design is great and I'd love to have one, but when I saw this european with the splinter forearm it grew on me fast.

I know huskie made the swedish mausers, which are still strong as hell, and in a hundred years they'll still be strong as hell. The barrels on the gun aren't like damascus or anything. The parts on this are, like anything old and swiss, amazingly well built, good quality, and perfectly fitted in a way you just won't find on a new gun anymore.

but you're right, I'm not sure about the durability with modern ammo. I did read online about one guy who started using 2 3/4 modern shells in his 2 1/2 inch chambers on the same model and it got loose after a year, he had a smith tighten it up and it got loose again in a year. So, apparently, even if you're a complete moron and try to blow your face off, it seems to handle the overpressure about as well as you can expect from the poor thing.

I'm just wondering if the same would happen over time if you gave it proper sized chambers. I understand putting the normal shells causes them to unfold the crimp out in the bore, where it's constricted... which in turn constricts the wad, and causes a crazy spike in pressure.

I'm not a hunter, and I don't go shotgunning very often. When I do, I only go about 25 shots before I get bored and move on to the next gun in the trunk, set up the spent hulls as rifle targets on the rocks. mostly this gun is just to be appreciated, occasionally shot, appreciated some more, talked about and handled with friends and like all good shotguns, kept loaded and ready in case of zombies.

I might add, with the looming shadows in legitimate gun and ammo supply lines and restrictions in our future, it bothers me a bit to have a shotgun that needs a special rare diet. I want to be able to shoot whatever I can get ahold of, or at least not have to search the archived online shelves of some special rare bullet manufacturer in belgium.

Okay I exaggerate. There are several 'order online' places for 2.5 inch shells. And cabella's can probably order some in for me for some ungodly price.

Just saying, i'd probably rather opt for the chamber mod, even if it's slightly more 'economical' in the short run to just buy a couple boxes of short shells per year. I'm more looking at safety as the weighing factor in chamber modding.

Now you know why I opted for one good 20 guage. Shells are everywhere for that thing. I saw a new one in Dunhams even had a short barrel. side by side 12 for about 400 bucks. Ill have to get back over there and see what it was. Mike
