The lever on my bolt broke off! The gun is a springfield 1903 A-3 sported, when the stock and scope were instaled, they had to modify
the bolt lever so it wouldnt hit the scope. (all done before I aquired the gun) Now its in the shop getting re welded!

Re: Broken bolt
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 9:36 AMDid it break along the weld line or was there a flaw in the metal.
I had to do the same adjustments for a friend's Mauser 8x57. He purchased bent bolt online and the action had to be slightly cut for it to close. A lot of hand fitting, then you have to go back and check it with bullets in as well.
What kind of a price did the smith quote you? -

Re: Broken bolt
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 1:51 PMMy smith is my buddy, so a favor for a favor! The break is right where the handel meets the bolt.
Get this, I ordered a 'new un-used' bolt from a catolog, and the cant send it to Kulifornia! WTF!!!! A friggin BOLT??? ITS A HUNDRED FRIGGIN YEARS OLD!!!!! I CANT BELEVE THIS BULL S***!! So I'm going to see if my buddy can order it for me. If not the catolog company said they would send it to my cousin in Co. then he can send it to me. -

Re: Broken bolt
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 6:45 PMI'm not sure, but the Springfield is just slightly too young to be shipped, but the bolt can be shipped by mail. I have a spanish mauser that is old enough to be shipped by mail-the entire gun.
Your smith will have to fit it.
Sodo you know the story of how the US Govt tried to rip off Paul Mauser when theybuilt the 03 springfield? -

Re: Broken bolt
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 7:05 AMSome day compare your Springfield to a Mauser and see how many similarities you spot. Back at the turn of the century, the US Govt actually engaged in copyright infringement when they developed the '03. Paul Mauser sued and was awarded the [then] staggering amount of $20,000!
Except for the cocking knob, the pringfield is an identical copy of Paul Mauser's creation. The double locking lugs, the bolt release, even the placement of the vent hole, are all common details patented by Mauser. We had been so impressed by the 7x57 Mausers fired at Teddy and the Rough Riders that we decided we had to get some of our own. Small wonder, even now, more than a hundred years later you can still buy modern rifles being built on the Mauser design. Other than the cocking knob and safety they are functionally identical.
Just a bit of history. I'm a big Mauser fan. -
