Tue, May 20, 2008 - 10:36 AMThey are still selling the Mosin for great prices, under $100 in many places. Mausers have hit the $150 mark, and Enfields are considered collectable these days (although I never cared for the gun--bad ergonomics)
Caliber wise I'd say my biggest gun would my double 58 caliber. It'll shoot bullets up to 560gr with 120gr of black powder. You can fit your finger into the barrel :)
Power wise I'd have to say that my 45-70 would be the winner. I can shoot up to a 400gr bullet with smokeless powder and make a hole big enough to stick your finger through. -

Tue, May 20, 2008 - 7:44 PMI really like that 45-70 lever you got. One day when my own collection is all grown up, I'd like to get a 45-70 gun. Probably a single shot, maybe a knock-off replica of Quigley's rifle. That'd be awesome. (And yes I know his was 45-110 but it saves about a hundred dollars per shot to get one in 45-70 instead) -

Sat, May 24, 2008 - 8:39 AMYou can always look at a 45-90. In fact there are modern replicas being made of the 1886 levergun. If you can;t kill it with a 45-90 then you need a young priest, an old priest, and a gallon of holy water.
When I was branch manager in SantaFe, one of my patrol sergeants brought in a gun to see if I thought it was valuable. He had an original 1886 in 40-60. The gun was about 94% condition and you could still see the color case hardening on the reciever. I told him to go out and buy a good gun safe, the gun would easily sell for >$4000! Even at $4k people would line up to fist fight over the gun. That gun gave me wood!

Sat, May 24, 2008 - 12:26 PMI guess I'd have to say a 12 gauge. I have big rifle's but a 12 gauge slug hit's like a sledge hammer. I've alway's thought a 12 gauge is probably the most versatile, best all around gun for hunting or whatever just for the different kind's of ammo that can go through it.
Maybe we should post a thread for the best all around gun. There has probably been one but I'm too lazy to go through all the old posts. -
